Working with Gender: Research Informed Insights from the Cass Review

The Cass Review, by Dr. Hilary Cass, 2024, provides an independent review of gender identity services.  The review presents a four-year UK evidence-based study of gender affirming care and its impact on the physical, mental, and psychological health of clients. This presentation will focus on the impact of medical interventions on growth and development and share treatment guidelines as reported in the Review.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe how stages of growth and development inform gender distress treatment as outlined in the Cass review.
  2. Differentiate the American Medical Association's model of care compared to treatment approaches in the UK.
  3. Discuss critical issues in providing services for clients experiencing gender distress based on the comprehensive, long-term research found in the Cass review.


Presenter:   Jan Elpel, Psy.D., LCPC (Ret.)

Dr. Jan Elpel received her Phd in Psychology from the California Graduate School of Psychology 1991. She specialized in Child Develpment, Family Systems and Parenting. She has supervised graduate students in Health and Human Development at Montana State University. Over the years she has presented workshops and led groups in parenting, and child and adolescent therapy and skillsbuilding.  When she is not writing articles and presenting at professional conferences she relishes her role as proud mother of six, grandmother of six (including one transgender grandchild), and great-grandmother of three.
